“It was a no-brainer” – Aaron Wan-Bissaka joins West Ham from Man United

West Ham United have announced the signing of defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United. The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a seven-year contract until June 2031 and joins the Hammers for an undisclosed fee, believed to be around £15m.

Wan-Bissaka completed his medical on Monday after agreeing a settlement with Man United to leave with one year remaining on his Old Trafford contract.

The right-back will wear the No.29 shirt at West Ham and becomes their eighth signing of the summer transfer window after Luis Guilherme, Max Kilman, Wes Foderingham, Crysensio Summerville, Niclas Fullkrug, Guido Rodriguez and Jean-Clair Todibo.

“It was a no-brainer for me to join West Ham – I’m excited and happy to be here,” Wan-Bissaka told the club’s official website.

Wan-Bissaka “excited” after finalising West Ham move
“It’s an amazing feeling to be back in London, and I’m excited for what’s coming. I was born here, so I know the ins and outs of London, which plays a big part in my life, so to be back playing in this city means a lot to me.

“I’m happy to be here, am grateful for the warm welcome, and I am excited to be playing for the club and will give it my all.

“I can’t wait to get on the pitch, get to know the players, and push on from there. I see a team that is in it together, that will push each other to win, and a group that has got each other’s backs through thick and thin, so being part of that and having that insurance helps a lot when you are surrounded by a good squad.”

West Ham technical director Tim Steidten, who has been key behind the club’s transfer dealings this summer, added: “I am delighted we’ve been able to get the deal to sign Aaron over the line. He’s exactly the type of player we’re looking to attract to this club in the prime years of his career.

“He’s an incredibly talented defender who we rate very highly – superb in one-on-one situations. He’s versatile too, which is clearly another positive. He’s played over 170 Premier League games during his career – he knows the division inside-out.

“I’d like to personally thank the board for their continued backing to bring players of such quality to West Ham. It’s a really exciting time for us as we prepare for the start of the new season this weekend.”

Man United to sign Mazraoui as Wan-Bissaka replacement
Wan-Bissaka leaves Man United five years after joining the club for a reported £50m from Crystal Palace.

The right-back, primarily known for his tenacious tacking and impressive one-on-one defending, made a total of 190 appearances for the Red Devils across all competitions, including 30 outings last season.

Wan-Bissaka reached the Europa League final with Man United in 2020-21 and was subsequently named in the competition’s Squad of the Season, before going on to win the 2023 EFL Cup and 2024 FA Cup with Erik ten Hag’s side.

Man United have made the decision to part ways with Wan-Bissaka as they have agreed a deal to sign Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, with the Morocco international having already travelled to the UK to complete his medical.

Wan-Bissaka is set to compete with Vladimir Coufal for regular starts in Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham side and could make his debut for the club when they welcome Aston Villa to the London Stadium for their opening Premier League game of the new season on August 17.
