‘I Accept My Punishment’: Wayne Rooney

Wayne Rooney has admitted he was wrong to swear into a television camera and said he accepts his punishment. In an Wayne Rooneyinterview on TalkSport radio the Manchester United striker spoke for the first time of the incident in the 4-2 victory over West Ham United when he swore into a camera as he celebrated his hat-trick.

“I didn’t realise what I’d done. It was just emotions, it was a release if you like of scoring the three goals to get us back in the game,” said Rooney, who was charged by the Football Association and given a two-match ban. “As soon as I realised after the game I apologised as soon as I could. Of course it was wrong of me to do, but I accept my punishment and you just have to move on. Hopefully the boys can pull through for me on Saturday and hopefully get to that FA Cup final.”

Rooney went on to praise his team-mate Ryan Giggs, telling TalkSport’s Richard Keys and Andy Gray: “What he has done at Man United, what he does for the younger players at the club, is absolutely fantastic. For me, he’s a genius and I don’t think it will be long before we call him Sir Ryan.”

He added: “Over the course of the season the manager has put a lot of the younger players in and it has worked. The likes of Chris Smalling, Javier Hernández and Darron Gibson have done great and we’ve managed to get the results we needed. The future looks good for us. We’re definitely on the up.”

Rooney, who did not score in the Champions League second-leg win over Chelsea, nevertheless was pleased with his performance. “It was a great performance by the boys and I thought over the two legs we deserved the victory,” he said. “I was happy with my own performance, delighted we got through, and I feel we’ve got a good chance of progressing to the final now.

“I’m delighted [with my form]. As everyone clearly knows it’s been a tough season for me but from the turn of the year I’ve been really pleased with my form. I’ve started to score goals again. I’m playing a different position now and I’m really enjoying it. I’m getting on the ball, getting involved, and I feel I can dictate the game from the position I’m playing. I’m really pleased with my form.”
