Roy Hodgson’s job could be on the line when Liverpool return to Anfield to take on Bolton in the English Premier League on Saturday.
The future of the Reds boss became even shakier after Wednesday’s shock 1-0 loss to previously bottom Wolves, and he will need a win against the Trotters to secure a stay of execution.
Bar the absence of long-term absentee Jamie Carragher (shoulder), Liverpool were at full strength for the visit of Wolves but could only deliver a flat and uninspired display in the loss.
Hodgson may choose to include the likes of Ryan Babel, Joe Cole, Maxi Rodriguez, Daniel Agger or Christian Poulsen in his starting line-up as he searches for a winning formula, after all five could only make the bench against Wolves.
Bolton also tasted defeat on Wednesday, though could be considered unlucky after an offside call in the lead-up to Chelsea’s winning goal went against them.
Manager Owen Coyle was quick to point out after the game that he believed the officials got the call wrong, but was still happy with his team’s showing at Stamford Bridge.
He appears likely to have no new injuries to contend with, though the likes of Ivan Klasnic, Martin Petrov and Mark Davies could get starts if any of Coyle’s starting XI find the three-day recovery beyond them.
A win would keep Bolton in sixth and continue their above-average expectations season.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are now just three points above the relegation zone and would cherish the chance to draw further away – perhaps saving Hodgson’s job in the process.
